This time it didn't ask for a code, it just went through.

Went back into the EWS and it started to connect.Logged back into the SmartHP app and restarted the instant ink process - luckily it had saved my address and card details so didn't have to re-enter and clicked start. And found suggested switching the printer off and back on (not exactly rocket science). Still nothing. Then, I googled it again and looked for something other than HP's own support. HP advice is that either your printer doesn't support web services (seemed unlikely as a pre-requisite for instant ink) or maybe the Firmware is outdated (see image).
HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR VERSION 4.9 CODE
Note to get access to this, you need to use the pin code for the printer inside the ink cover (another but different code). My SmartHP app still waiting for a code to register the instant ink.At this point I was tired and went to bed.Next morning, googled HP printer won't connect to web services. So I did that - to receive errors saying 'system error' and unable to set up Web Services (see image). No luck - what prints out is a page saying 'Unable to connect to Web Services' and instructions to go directly into the printer's embedded web server (EWS) - by typing the printer's IP address into a browser. So why am I asked for it? Nothing on the box or documentation with the printer suggested it was HP+.Anyway, next step I assumed maybe there was another code so followed the instructions to print the info page (pressing i and X at the same time). Remember I am in the Smart HP app - so an error telling me I needed to use the SmartHP app was unhelpful.I googled HP+ and this is apparently a printer where it was already registered and didn't need a code. But no - on entering the code (which looked exactly like the code it said I needed) I was told that this was a different type of printer (see image) - I had an HP+ which had to be registered through the SmartHP app. I'd read about this in the reviews and handily it had printed out earlier so I had this. The last stage was to enter the printer code. All my details in, credit card etc, added the FREEINK code for an extra month.

So I tried with my laptop - as really I would want to print from there anyway. After downloading the Smart HP app and linking the printer, I was then able to click the instant ink button and be told I was entitled to the free trial.

HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR VERSION 4.9 REGISTRATION
Note this has to be activated within 7 days of registering your printer to get the free trial, so I was keen to get it set up.First try using an iphone - following set up of the printer I wasn't offered anything re the free trial, just told an issue with the registration had occurred. The printer quality is fine for a sub £50 printer and speedy enough for the odd work document and personal admin that I'm using it for.The real hassle came from the instant ink subscription.
HP PRINT AND SCAN DOCTOR VERSION 4.9 PASSWORD
Code for an extra month of free instant ink 5ckft1.The printer itself was up and running on the first attempt (15-20 mins depending on how long your wi-fi password is). Settle in and try switching it off and on again.

Like others I read the reviews and was worried it would be glitchy to set up.TL DR - It is glitchy and the UX is pretty bad. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2021
